ELCA/Metro
Chicago Synod – Working Group on the Middle East [An action group of the
Proclamation Team/Global Mission Committee] 1.
Charged with
implementing the following objectives: ·
Education -
To promote
understanding of the status of Christians in the region -
To build
relationships among Christians, Jews and Muslims -
To help U.S. Christians
become involved in Middle East peacemaking -
To confront
misuse of Holy Scriptures in exploiting fear or justifying aggression -
To present an
overall view of Middle East issues ·
Advocacy -
To work with a
national network of advocates -
To link
advocacy with prayer -
To follow lead
of ELCA policies -
To work with a
few selected issues ·
Contact with
the Middle East -
To promote
visits to the region by Church and lay leaders -
To hear from
Church leaders and other religious persons from the region who are visiting the
U.S. 2.
Function as
Follows: ·
Meetings -
Held in the
evening every 4-6 weeks, schedules at previous meeting -
Receives
reports from individual members and subcommittees conducting specific
projects -
Sets general
direction and selects issues to be worked on by subcommittees -
May include
study of a Middle East issue, time permitting ·
Associations -
Coordinates
educational activities and issues with Chicago Church Network for Education
on Palestine (CNEP) -
Coordinates
advocacy activities and issues with Churches for Middle East Peace –
Grassroots Advocacy Project/Illinois Region (CMEP/GAP/Illinois) -
Coordinates
general direction and issues with ELCA/Division of Global Mission/Program for
Europe, Middle East and Horn of Africa and Synods in sister-synod
relationship with Middle East Churches ·
Current

congregations -
Presentation,

Augusta Victoria Hospital |
Leaders in the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) fear the Israeli government is about to impose anemployer's tax that could cause the closure of the only hospital offeringmodern treatment for certain illnesses to people living in the Palestinian territories. Bishop Munib A. Younan of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan, which serves Israel, Jordan and Palestine, said the LWF-run Augusta Victoria Hospital in East Jerusalem was the only specialistcancer unit in the territories and thesole center for kidney dialysis.
